The Basics of Video SEO
Unfortunately not all videos go viral and get 100 million views (although that would be nice). Once you’ve created your video you’ll more likely need the help of some solid video SEO best practises and online PR methods to help users find and view your videos.
To make the most of this form of content there are two forms of attack: ‘on-page’ and ‘off-page’ optimisation.
Search engines can be pretty awesome but there are some limitations to their awesomeness. Like images, they can’t view your videos so if you’re hosting them directly on your site it’s up to you to tell the search engines what they’re about using the relevant keywords.
Some factors to think about for effective video SEO are:
- Catchy keyword rich titles
- A good description/summary
- File name itself
- Adding to your video sitemap (similar to a sitemap.xml but formatted specifically for video)
Whilst YouTube is undoubtedly the master of the video sharing universe at the minute there are also a number of other channels which do the same job. Post your videos everywhere (not forgetting to include keyword rich titles and descriptions). The more sites your videos are on the more views they’ll get (make sure the sites appropriate first).
